Barrister Dan Nwanyanwu,mni, OFR.
Barr, Dan Nwanyanwu was born on the 23rd of November, 1959 in Amuzu-Amaimo in Ikeduru Local Government Area in Imo State.
He attended St. James primary school in Amuzu and Oraifite boys high school in Anambra state. He studied Labour Management Relations in the school of Business, Howard University, Washington D.C. United States of America. He worked with Union bank between 1979-1993. He was elected as local Secretary and branch Secretary in Apapa of the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE).
He became the Domestic committee Chairman of the Union Bank unit of NUBIFIE in 1982. With this position, he became a member of the National Executive Council of the Union. In the same year he was elected as the National Treasurer of the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), a post he held till 1989 when he was elected the National President of the National Union of Banks, insurance and Financial institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), which automatically made him a member of the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
In 1992, he attended the prestigious National Institute for policy and strategic studies, kuru ,Jos (SEC.14) which led to him being awarded as “Member of the National Institute” (mni). On graduation in November of the same year, he thought of leaving the Banking sector to conclude the study of Law which he had earlier commenced.
In February 1993, he resigned his appointment with the Union Bank to enable him finish the programme. He finished his law Degree in 1998 and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School. He was through with law school and was called to the Nigerian Bar in the year 2000. He also did his Masters degree in Law (LL.M) in University of Lagos.
He did his Pupilage and practice of Law under the close supervision of Late Legal Icon, Chief F.R.A Williams (Timi the Law), in Chief Rotimi Williams Chambers. He has ever since then been a member of the famous and prestigious “Black Table”.
In 2004, he was drafted to lead the” Party for social Democracy” (PSD) which led to his emergence as its National Chairman in a well attended convention. The convention in session on his prompting and insistence had to change its name to represent what it is and its membership, ‘Labour Party’.
Barr. Dan Nwanyanwu started from the scratch to organize and lead a political party not known anywhere in the country apart from the certificate issued to it. He led the Labour party ever since then till 2014 to an enviable position. He was re-elected in Dec. 2009 as the National Chairman of the Labour Party in a Convention held in Abuja.
In a Convention in October 2014, he did not put himself up for re-election as the National Chairman, even though there was no constitutional impediment against his re-election. He was unanimously elected by the Convention in session as the first Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Party.
In 2014, Barr Dan Nwanyanwu represented Labour Party at the National Conference made up of 492 Nigerians. At the Conference, he insisted on the unity of the country, good governance and the need for states to be self-reliant and not dependent on oil. He equally advocated for transparency in government and insisted on stronger and stricter punishment for corrupt officials of government. He also advocated for the development of solid minerals nationwide. As one with Labour background, he did call for employment of young people both skilled and unskilled out of the Labour market.
In February 2015, he resigned as the Chairman Board of Trustees of Labour Party and also withdrew his membership of the Party. He is currently not into Partisan Politics but is being vocal on Political and Economic issues
Barr. Dan Nwanyanwu has served as a member of the Small Scale Industries Committee of the National Directorate of Employment during the time of Major. General Ike Nwachukwu as Hon. Minister of Labour and Productivity. He was also a member of UTILITIES CHARGES COMMISSION under the leadership of AVM Nura Imam.
Barr. Dan Nwanyanwu was the Acting Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Akoko in Ondo State, (AAUA).
In recognition of his contributions to humanity, the Osemawe of Ondo kingdom, HRM Oba Dr. Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo (Jilo 111), on the 500th Anniversary of Osemawa Dynasty, conferred on Barrister Dan Nwanyanwu , the title of Otun Atunluse of Ondo Kingdom on the 17th July 2010.
In recognition of his immense contribution in deepening democracy in Nigeria and his services to humanity and society, the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on the 17th of September 2012 conferred on Barr. Dan Nwanyanwu, the National Honours of “Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic, (OFR)”.
Barr Dan Nwanayanwu is happily married to Mrs Jane Onyinye Nwanyanwu and their marriage is blessed with four (4) children :
- Chukwuemeka Olusegun Nwanyanwu (M) – lawyer
- George Adedeji Odinachi Nwanyanwu (M) – Marketing/Economics student
- Adline Onyinyechi Nwanyanwu (F) – Law student
- Clinton Maduabughchukwu Nwanyanwu (M) – Biological science student. Dan Nwanyanwu is currently into Legal practice, Conflict resolution, negotiator and business Facilitator.
